Phoenix Film Critics Society has announced its 2017 award winners.
The Shape of Water Wins Best Picture, 3 other Phoenix Film Critics Society 2017 Awards
“The Shape of Water is truly a film that warrants attention,” said PFCS President Gayle Bass. “It’s one of those films that stays with you long after viewing.”
Frances McDormand received Best Actress for “Three Billboards,” and the film also took awards for Best Supporting Actor (Sam Rockwell), Best Ensemble Acting and Best Original Screenplay. Gary Oldman won Best Actor for his performance as Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour,” and Alison Janney takes home the Best Supporting Actress award for her turn as the title character’s mother in “I, Tonya.” McKenna Grace won both the Breakthrough Performance and the Best Performance by a Youth awards for "Gifted.”
“Coco” won both Best Animated Film and Best Song. “Disney clearly knows where to strike gold in affectionate storytelling and music.”
Of the acting winners, Bass said, “Gary Oldman completely transformed himself. And what isn’t there to like about Frances McDormand?”
"The Disaster Artist" won for Best Adapted Screenplay, while best documentary went to “City of Ghosts.” "War for the Planet of the Apes" took Best Visual Effects, while Disney’s live-action "Beauty and the Beast" won for Best Costumes.
The PFCS also awards the film they feel audiences missed, but shouldn't have, with "The Overlooked Film of the Year" award. This year it was given to "Gifted."
A complete list of winners is provided below.
The Phoenix Film Critics Society presents an entire slate of awards each year. To qualify for the 2017 awards, films had to be screened in the Phoenix area by Friday, December 8, 2017. Only critic members of the Society may vote. The films must open in theaters prior to the end of the year to be eligible for awards consideration.
The Phoenix Film Critics Society is a tax-exempt, not-for-profit, self-funded, independent organization consisting of professional film critics and film journalists in Arizona. For more information, visit: https://www.phoenixfilmcriticssociety.org
